Alumni/Alumna: Initiated members who are no longer undergraduates.
Associate Member (New Member): A new member of a fraternity or sorority not yet initiated.
Badge: The pin of an initiated member.
Bid: A formal invitation to join a Greek organization.
Chapter: The local affiliation of a national fraternity or sorority.
Colony: A group of men or women who are in th eprocess of becoming a Chapter, by meeting certain requirements of the National Organization. This process can take several months and generally varies for each organization.
Formal Recruitment: The time designated by Greek Council in which the potential members and current members get acquainted through a series of social events.
Fraternity: A national organization for collegiate men or women.
Greek: A member of a fraternity or sorority.
Greek Council: A council of Greek students chosen to serve as a governing body for all Greek organizations on campus.
Initiation: The traditional ritual which brings the associate member info full member and active status.
IFC (Interfraternity Council) - The representative governing body for national fraternities on campus affiliated with the North American Interfraternity Conference.
Legacy: A prospective member whose parent, grandparent, or sibling is an initiated member of a certain fraternity or sorority.
New Member Education: The time following a bid and prior to initiation. This time is generally used to educate new members about Greek Life and their particular sorority/fraternity. It is also a time to for new members to become better acquainted with their sisters/brothers.
NPC(National Panhellenic Conference) - A conference body of nationally recognized women's social fraternities. The local governing council of sororities is referred to as Panhellenic Council.
NPHC(National Pan-Hellenic Conference) - A conference body of 5 nationally recognized fraternities and 4 nationally recognized women's sororities which are historically African-American. The local governing council of fraternities and sororities is also called NPHC or Pan-Hellenic.
Philanthropy: Charitable projects or donations sponsored by a fraternity or sorority.
Recruitment: The process used by fraternities and sororities to select new members.
Sorority: A national organization for collegiate women.
